If you are unfamiliar with this approach for teaching reading, check it out. I use it with Special Needs students all the time, and they gain several grade levels of reading ability in a short amount of time. I have had Special Ed. kindergarten readers, who are 13 years old, become excellent readers at 7th grade level in just one school year. Most gain at least three or four grade levels.
