Cultural and Brain Differences In Dyslexia
Scans of the brains of dyslexics from different cultures has reveled that there are differences between how western dyslexic’s and Chinese dyslexic’s brains function whilst reading. The research was carried out by the US National Institute of Mental Health and published in Nature. MRI scans US and Chinese dyslexics showed problems in different areas. This suggests that dyslexia has different causes in different cultures. Extrapolating from these results it could be concluded that the cause of dyslexia is not related to the reading areas of the brain at all, e.g. the cerebellum.
