ADHD and Girls
Educational problems such as dyslexia, ADHD and autism are generally associated with boys because they are diagnosed more frequently than girls. This may be because boys are more likely to be genetically predisposed to the problem or it may be that boys with problems are more prone to making trouble and thus get noticed more. A 1999 study by Dr Biederman et al indicates that girls may be under diagnosed (see Clinical Correlates of ADHD in Females: Findings From a Large Group of Girls Ascertained From Pediatric and Psychiatric Referral Sources).
In a new study Dr Bierderman found that those girls diagnosed as ADHD have a higher risk of depression, eating disorders, smoking and underaged drinking. In the case of depression, ADHD sufferes are ten times more likely to suffer a major episode.
