Autism Levels Higher But Stable
A new study by leading researcher Dr Fombonne in the American Journal of Psychiatry shows that whilst autism rates are higher than they were thirty to forty years ago they have not increased in the last ten years. “Today’s higher autism rate … could simply be a result of better diagnosis and awareness,” says Dr. Fombonne. “Although it is reassuring that autism is not on the rise, this study also shows that one in 165 children is affected with a pervasive development disorder, which has strong implications on services“. Study abstract: Pervasive Developmental Disorders in Preschool Children: Confirmation of High Prevalence.
In previous work, The Prevalence of Autism, Dr Fombonne commented that “while the prevalence of autism increased from 5.8 to 14.9 per 10 000, the prevalence for mental retardation decreased from 28.8 to 19.5 per 10 000. These trends then cancel each other“. See also Autism Epidemic! What Autism Epidemic?.
