Letter Reversals in Dyslexia: A Red Herring?
A classic symptom for dyslexia list letter or word reversals ‘b’ instead of ‘d’ , ’saw’ instead of ‘was’. However there is evidence that this is just a myth. It appears that dyslexics make more reversal errors but they make more errors of all types. So a normal child might make ten mistakes of which three will be reversals whereas a dyslexic child might make thirty mistakes, of which nine are reversals. So it is the number of errors in general that is important not the number of reversals.
