Talking Head to Help Autism
The Animated Speech Corporation use software to teach deaf children to speak and are now promoting it for use with autistic children. The software uses a carefully animated head that has human speech patterns and movements for the children to watch and listen to. There is a research section on the company’s website which references the paper Development and Evaluation of a Computer-Animated Tutor for Vocabulary and Language Learning for Children with Autism. It concludes: "The research indicates that children with autism are capable of learning new language within an automated program centered around a computer-animated agent, multimedia, and active participation and can transfer and use the language in a natural, untrained environment".
The software costs US$99 for a home licence.
