Neurofeedback Training

Long time reader Robert has sent me a collection of interesting links that I’m working my way through. First up is  a study on biofeedback and ADHD.
The biofeedback technique used focused on teaching children with ADHD to control their own brain activity. The study doesn’t specify exactly how this was done but normally the subject’s mental activity is detected by EEG and displayed on a monitor. The subject then tries to control the way they think until they can see the desired pattern on the monitor. This training takes place several times a week for a number of months and there is evidence that it makes a different to the children.
"…for the [trained children] group only there was a significant activation of the right [anterior cingulate cortex] (ACC). These results suggest that in AD/HD children, [neurofeedback training] has the capacity to normalize the functioning of the ACC, the key neural substrate of selective attention".
The most important aspect about this study is that it demonstrates that the brains of people with ADHD can be trained to work in the same ways as a normal person. As with Dyslexia and fMRI this demonstrates that ADHD is treatable and can be, in theory, cured. This just heightens the pointlessness of taking medication as a long-term strategy for ADHD. The drugs will not train the brain to think in the right way.
