Myomancy ADHD, Dyslexia and Autism

One Word Every Two Hours

This is how fast children learn new words yet its rare for a parent to have to explain a word. Normal children seem to pick meaning up from context but what about autistic children? Cognitive Daily has an excellent article: How kids learn words: Are they paying attention to the speaker’s gaze? analyzing a new study that examines this issue.

  1. Fascinating article. I have a daughter with Cerebral Palsy and she is having a difficult time learning vocabulary because she is not able to enunciate new words well. I don’t think the examples from the article help me directly, but the article has helped me think about her learning disabilities in a new light. I wonder if my teaching method needs to be altered. Perhaps I am spending too much time trying to teach her the way I taught my other three daughters instead of learning how she learns…

  2. Good luck with teaching your daughter. Encountering different learning styles can be hard to deal with in the best of circumstances. Throw in the complications of Cerebral Palsy and it can be a real challange. I suggest you check out the Eide Neurolearning Blog [ http://www.eideneurolearningblog.blogspot.com/ ] as they often deal with learning styles and educational problems.

Just checked out Splintered Mind, a great blog.
