The Phone’s Ringing Blue, It Must Be A Friend
Motorola have just announced the winners of its first MOTOFRWD competition. Aimed at students, the challenge was to come up with new concepts for mobile phones and similar gadgets.
The winner is a ‘mood phone’ aimed at people with Asperger’s and similar problems reading social clues. The idea is that the phone will analysis the voice of the person calling for tone, pitch and rhythm to detect what mood the call is in. The phone will then change colour to indicate the mood.
Whilst there are several problems with this concept, not least is the fact its hard to see your own phone when using it, its an interesting for two reasons. Firstly because a company as large as Motorola thinks that there is enough people with social difficulties to be worth marketing a product for. Secondly it gives a clue to where technologies may take us in the next 20 years. How about glasses that analyses a person’s body language and gives the wearer clues via a built-in display? Its almost possible with today’s technology. Does anyone else have a better suggestion?
