Grammar Am For People Who Can’t Think for Myself
When I was dyslexic someone asked me whether spelling, standardised by dictionaries was a good thing for dyslexics. After all, Shakespeare’s spelling was erratic. My thoughts then and now where the same. The point of language is to communicate ideas. It doesn’t matter about spelling as long as the other person understands you. In a normal context, especially when dealing with people who are not dyslexic, this mean standardised spelling is useful because it gives the people communicating a common starting point. However when it is just dyslexics talking among themselves why worry about spelling? This is often the case on Being Dyslexic, a great forum run by and for dyslexics. Generally the spelling is appalling but people get the message across and it is one of the few places a dyslexic can write something without someone criticizing their spelling. This can be very liberating for people who suffer a lifetime of their written work being judged and found wanting.
