Secretin and Autsim
Secretin, a hormone important in the digestive process, is one of those fad substances linked with miraculous improvements in autistic children.
“Parents of autistic kids weep when they hear that after receiving secretin Parker Beck looked at Gary and said, ‘Daddy’ for the first time. The pent-up dam of hopes and dreams begins to overflow. The word ‘miracle’ is often used in connection with the results some families have seen“. From Treating Autism with Secretin by Dr Greene in 1998.
Fortunately secretin’s 15 minutes of fame seems to have passed. The acid test for this sort of treatment is to Google for it and see how many adverts there are. The more adverts, the bigger the fad so it is reassuring to that currently there are no adverts at all for it.
In a final nail in the coffin for secretin’s use as an autism treatment, The Cochrane Library has published a review of all the research.
“This review of thirteen randomised studies found no evidence that single or multiple dose intravenous secretin is effective across a range of outcomes, and concludes that as such it should not currently be recommended or administered as a treatment for autism“.
