The Face and Emotions
I’m reading a couple of books by Paul Ekman, a world expert in facial expressions and what they mean. It is fascinating stuff and I’m simultaneously amazed by how much information we give away via our faces and how little of we pick up on (at least consciously). My interest in Dr Ekman’s work comes from the lack of empathy and understanding of emotions that people on the autistic frequently have and how they can be taught to read them.
So when I saw a link to Artnatomy, the Anatmical Basis of Facial Expressions Learning Tool I had to take a look. Artnatomy is a sophisticated Flash tool for understanding the muscle structure of the face and how the muscles work individually and together to display emotions. It is a tool aimed at teaching so its not something you can easily dip into. Instead it is worth putting in some time and exploring the options.
