Stim Nation: Side-Effects and Overdoses

An estimated 3100 people go to ER every year due to accidental overdoses of or allergic reaction to ADHD medication.

From August 2003 through December 2005, the researchers counted 188 ER visits for problems with the drugs at the 64 hospitals in the network, a representative sample of ERs monitored to spot drug side effects.
Doctors linked use of stimulant ADHD drugs to 73 patients with side effects or allergic reactions. Another 115 accidentally swallowed ADHD pills, including a month-old baby, or took too much.

  1. is there any official record of incidence of depression as a side effect of ADHD medication in children?
i have known several children who became very severely depressed on medication – one who also experienced disturbing hallucinations – and were fine when taken off the drugs, but i have never come across depression as a recognized side-effect. Methylphenidate was the medication involved in all but two of those cases.

  2. No, I’ve never seen a link to medication. However the depression may be related to the ADHD not the medication. There is a 20% co-morbidity with Bipolar disorder.

  3. I just read a news article yesterday about a 4 year old child who died from an overdose of her medication. The parents are now being charged for this.
This is so sad and makes me believe even more that I should not be endangering my son by giving him these meds.

  4. Well, christine, i had been on the stuff from 3rd grade till my senior year of highschool. I wish that i was never even put on the stuff in the first place. It is not worth it… The dangers in it hurting your childs developement socially, physically, and mentally… Its just not worth it. Atleast in my opinion.
