Stim Nation: New ADHD Drug Getting Ready for Market
Lisdexamfetamine Dimesylate, currently known by the monica NRP104 is a new ADHD drug being developed by New River Pharmaceuticals and is currently under testing. It is a form of Dextroamphetamine that has been formulated to make it harder to abuse.
The stage II and III testing results have been presented at the annual American Psychiatric Association meeting. Stage II and stage III results are online and both show improvements in behaviour. What is interesting about these test results is the effectiveness of the placebo. In a study looking at treating cocaine addition in ADHD sufferers, they found that the placebo was just as effective as ADHD drugs. In these drug trials they did not have such a striking effect. This is not surprising as the drug manufacturers will have arranged the trials to show their drug in the best possible light. Despite this, the placebo did have a statistically significant effect on the children.
Two other points of note on these studies. Firstly adverse events (side effects) were reported as mild to moderate and included insomnia (8 percent), decreased appetite (6 percent) and anorexia (4 percent). The second important point is that these studies only ran for 4 weeks yet the average user will take them for months. The FDC and the manufactures have no idea what the long-term effect of using this drug will be.
