The Stigma of Dyslexia
It seems that after thirty or forty years of education and awareness raising, dyslexia is still misunderstood.
Federal Judge Halts Missouri Executions is a story about how a judge put a stop to the execution by lethal injection of a prisoner. One of the reasons the judge gave was that the a surgeon involved with the executions was dyslexic.
“The court is gravely concerned that a physician who is solely responsible for correctly mixing the drugs … has a condition which causes him confusion with regard to numbers,” [Judge] Gaitan wrote.
Never mind that dyslexia is a problem with letters not numbers (that’s dyscalculia). The real issue is the perception that a surgeon, after countless years of eduction and training, still cannot be trusted to do their job because they are dyslexic.
