Western diets is rich on oils that the body converts into GLA (omega 6), but it is not rich in omega 6 oil itself. If you are healthy that is OK. If you have viral infections, like herpes infections, you dont convert the oils into GLA and then you need a direct intake of GLA. If you have problems with protaglandines you may have problems to convert oil into GLA (omega 6).

I would like to second the above comment: the statement "As the western diet already contains as much as 10 time more omega-6 than omega-3 there is no need to take supplemental EPA." is wrong.

Because our modern western diet contains so much omega-6 we should LOWER that intake of omega-6 (abundant in plant/"vegetable" oils) AND/OR INCREASE the intake of omega-3 (which are EPA/DHA)

the above article has many inaccurate statements

despite DHA being an omega-6 fish oil. false.

As the western diet already contains as much as 10 time more omega-6 than omega-3 there is no need to take supplemental EPA. all the more reason to supplement with EPA.
