Dore Australia Update

There is some official news on the Dore Talk forum:

It is not true that Dore Australia is in liquidation, but what is true is that it has been put into voluntary administration. This is a very important difference as the motive of the exercise is to evaluate different options for setting up a sustainable model for the delivery of the Dore Program going forward.

The statement sounds like its putting a good spin on a bad situation as a company only enters administration, voluntary or not, when it is in serious financial problems. If a company enters liquidation voluntary it means the directors are fulfilling their legal duty to cease trading if they are insolvent. Involuntary liquidation occurs when a creditor takes a company to court in order to recover the debt.

I’m not sure of the Australian laws but under the UK system entering administration means that the company’s debts outstrip the assets with no reasonable expectation of the situation being reversed. This probably means they do not have the cash to pay staff, rent or interest on loans. Simply put, the company doesn’t have enough customers to cover its day-to-day costs. Under US law there is the less severe option where a company can enter Chapter 11 bankruptcy that protects it from its creditors. This is normally triggered when a company is near bankruptcy but believes with a few months of special protection it can become solvent again. I don’t know if Australia has this sort of halfway-house that Dore can use.

One thing is certain. Unless Dore Australia can be sold or restructured as a going concern, it is the staff and the parents who will carry the can. In all legal systems, the Government and banks are always the first to get paid from whatever assets are left. Minor creditors such as customers and staff will be lucky to see their money again.

  1. Podblack (Aus EdPsych blogger) has posted a bit on the legal options: http://podblack.wordpress.com/2008/05/18/dore-starts-talkingsomewhat/
She’s planning to visit in person Monday.

I’m trying to keep links to everything I’ve heard, from any source, on my blog: http://brainduck.wordpress.com/2008/05/17/australiacollapse/

Anyway, if anyone knows what’s going on please let me know & I’ll put it up on my blog, I’m happy to keep it anonymous if you’d rather. brainquack at gmail dot com.

I’m not so happy about this, would rather argue the research than finances. However, UK people might want to note that DORE UK is not necessarily in the best state either: http://gimpyblog.wordpress.com/2008/01/28/are-dore-in-deep-finanical-doo-doo/
don’t know how this will affect it.
    Good luck to all affected.

  2. Duck, dont feel bad, this is ALL about the research, it has been argued out and this was the outcome. They had never won an argument about thier research, its just that before now it never got the coverage, so its thanks to ABC (who probably googled dore during thier research) found blogs similar to your and decided to highlight the issue. I think you can feel very proud that this had been put a stop to, of course we have to bear in mind the people who have been conned, its very upsetting for them (I mean staff and parents)

  3. Not sure about that - in ‘Duck dream world’, everyone would ’see the light’, start basing interventions on sound evidence, and people could keep their jobs and provide the best evidence-based support going.
    This is sad.

  4. Yes it is of course sad. It has been sad all along that the resources have been diverted to Dore that should have been spent on proper interventions. But you ideal has happened here, the truth has won. Yes there is a fall out but there cant be any other outcome, Dore was never going to say ‘OK you win, everyone gets a refund’ This is as good as it gets im afraid. I know its hard to be happy when so many have been conned but at least it will stop it happening in the future.

  5. I have it on very good authority that more revealations regarding Dore UK are due to hit the media in the next 10 days. Research is just one of the items due to be reported on.

  6. What ABC program? Can I have a link please? Do either of you belive that cerabellum exercises can help dyslexics?
How’s Dore doing in the USA?
There are so many treatments, programs, etc for dyslexic that don’t have the reseach to back them up. All come with a price tag.
Tom what in your opinion is a proper intervention for dyslexia? If anyone has an opinion on intervention I would like know.

  7. Robin, the four corners programme is here: http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/content/2007/s1994872.htm
probably the most informative 45 minutes you’ll spend if you want the background to this.
It appears to be only Australia who are affected, NZ appointments are still going ahead, the rest of the world is still operating at the moment.
For the rest of what you’ve asked - see my blog.

  8. Hi everyone
Something had to eventually give. I have envied your commitment to the Dyslexia and Dore issue.
I don’t think this is the end of the Dore programme. not sure what shape it will take though?

  9. Thank you very much brainduck. I did watch the program. I have offen wondered about boardbase reading IQ or even reading scores before Dore treatment and afterwards. I posted about this awhile back on Doretalk.
I also wonder why so many with dylexia have trouble with memory, backwards letters & numbers and sence of direction right left/north south.
I can understand poor phonic awareness poor decoding skills. But that doesn’t explain confusion and memory prombles. Those prombles are what got me interested in Dore. And in genral how information travels around inside the brain.

  10. US seems to be down too. Centres closing.
