Inspiration

Hello Everyone.

I'm Emma, Mum to Jake age 11 who started the Dore programme in December 2006. Like many of you others Jake is still going through the programme and like everyone else we are very saddened to find ourselves in this position, but after reading some of the comments on this site I felt I needed to give some encouragement to some others, especially the ones who have started the programme very recently and must be thinking how you have wasted your hard earnt money.  I want to share with you Jakes story and hope that it inspires you to keep going with the excersises that are on My Dore.  Lets all hope that Mr Dore finds the answers he is looking for because what he has done for my son and I'm sure for thousands others has been more than fantastic, Thankyou

Jakes Story

Jake was about 7 years old when he was diagnosed with dyslexia.  In some ways it was a relief to know there was a reason he was so forgetful, clumsy and struggled so much with his reading and spelling. He was put onto School Action Plus to try and help him but he was dropping further and further behind.  Jake hated school and I used to dread going to parents evening as the feedback was always ,"He's a nice boy but a bit of a daydreamer and doesn't always try his best".   I also noticed he was becoming more aggressive and withdrawn at home as time went by.  I heard about the Dore programme but didn't look into it at the time as I couldn't understand how excersises would help.

Two years later I read the book 'Dyslexia: The miracle cure',  half way through the book I was shocked and alarmed to read about Mr Dore's daughter and her attempted suicides.  I recognised a lot of her problems in Jake.  He didn't get involved in family discussions but at the time we just put it down to him being a quiet person.  I now know it was because he couldn't keep up with the conversation if more than 3 people were talking in a group.   His memory was terrible,  if you asked him to fetch something from another room he would come back a minute later and say "What did you want me to get?".  You could teach Jake something one day , for example times tables or how to tell the time and the very next day he would have completely forgotten what he had learned.  After reading the whole book my husband and I booked Jake onto the Dore programme even though we were sceptical we thought it was worth trying.

After being on the Dore programme 6 weeks we started to notice changes in Jake.  His mood swings became less frequent and he started to get involved in conversations.  At the next parents evening they told me he seemed like a different boy, he was now interested in school and every aspect of his school work seemed to be improving.  After a few months the 11 + approached, I had never even intended for Jake to take it  because no one including me or Jakes teachers expected him to do very well and I didn,t want him to feel a failure as his older brother had passed it 2 years previously.

Jake was determined to take it despite my concerns and by this time his memory was improving so quickly he could now recite all of his times tables faster than I ever could.  All this happened in just 10 months of being on the Dore programme,  the changes in him were huge.  When we got the results to the 11 +  everyone who knows Jake was amazed, he has passed!…

As I said before Jake is still on the programme and some days its difflicult to keep him motivated but his life has been turned around because of the Dore programme and I hope his story has been inspiration to some of you.  Good Luck Mr Dore.
